Optimal Energy Storage Deployment and Renewables Integration for Active Energy Consumers in Cyprus

Given the numerous challenges confronting the Cypriot electricity system — ranging from the rapid surge in photovoltaics adoption to the imminent integration of new conventional generation units and the prospective electrical interconnection of the island — a pressing demand emerges for more sophisticated systems. These systems must facilitate precise predictions concerning production, energy source availability, weather conditions, and consumption.

Through Optistore Project Petrolina Electric will expand its Energy Management System (EMS) that it uses to include energy storage technologies that will assist its Petrolina Electric’s customers to optimise the deployment of their assets. Petrolina Electric and The Cyprus Institute aim to optimise their operations to maximize gains for both. OptiStore will utilise the RES resources at the PROTEAS facility (PV, wind, solar dishes, Rankine-cycle electricity generation) and storage (in batteries and molten salts) to simulate and test the EMS algorithms before deployment.

As part of OptiStore Research Project, Petrolina Electric created a simulation tool to help Consumers better understand and evaluate electricity generation by Solar Energy (Photovoltaic Systems), in combination with storage solutions for their premises. By using the Simulation tool, consumers can assess the technical and financial performance of an investment in a hybrid photovoltaic system with battery storage, under several configuration scenarios.

Furthermore, consumers can choose the Optimization mode, and the calculator will propose the top 10 battery size options.

The project ENTERPRISES/ENERGY/1123/0054 is implemented within the framework of the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan “Cyprus_Tomorrow” ("Κύπροςτο αύριο"), with finding from the European Union – Next Generation EU, through the Research and Innovation Foundation.
